What people are saying about The New Small

Praise

“A powerful, important, and eye-opening book. Simon expertly demonstrates how, by skillfully using technology, social media, and collaborative tools, even the smallest of businesses can achieve amazing levels of success. The New Small is a very big idea. Read it, but be warned: You may want to change your life once you’ve finished it.”

–Mitch Joel, President, Twist Image and author of Six Pixels of Separation

“We’ve known for a while that ‘small is the new big,’ to quote Seth Godin, but a piece has been missing—specifically the piece that explains how technology has been accelerating the trend and how companies can harness technology to take advantage of it. In The New Small, Phil Simon does a masterful job of filling that void. I heartily recommend it.”

–Bo Burlingham, editor-at-large Inc. magazine and author of Small Giants: Companies That Choose To Be Great Instead of Big

The New Small is a veritable treasure chest of management tips and technologies. Simon’s storytelling rivals Malcolm Gladwell and his knowledge of technology rivals Chris Anderson. A must-read.”

–Paul Spiegelman, Author, Why is Everyone Smiling?

“An excellent book for seasoned business owners and entrepreneurs alike. Ever wondered what new technologies are out there and if they make sense for your business? When you read The New Small, be sure to have a notepad and highlighter handy, You will be using both as you gleam nuggets of technology and business insight. Highly recommended.”

–Shama Kabani, Author of the Best-Selling The Zen of Social Media Marketing

“From arrows to gunpowder, from ATMs to email, technology has always been the great equalizer. In this powerful and indispensable book, Phil Simon shows how small and medium-sized business can out-duel the big guys through smart and sharp adoption of nimble tech. The New Small shows precisely why, what, and how inexpensive technology can improve every facet of your business. It’s not a book, it’s an investment in transformation.”

–Jay Baer, co-author of The NOW Revolution: 7 Shifts to Make Your Business Faster, Smarter, and More Social

“Phil Simon has outdone himself with The New Small. An eye-opening collection of true-stories of small businesses, you might read this book thinking that the examples Simon outlines are the exception rather than the rule. But Simon shows how the companies profiled here haven’t done anything more than smartly harness technology and social media tools to create home grown success with barely any budget. In my own experience, I’ve know many small business owners who believe that reaching larger audiences is outside their reach because they simply don’t have the know-how, money or time to engage in an effective marketing effort. This books proves them all wrong – with the expert insights that Simon provides in The New Small, small business owners have no excuse for not increasing their sales, market or size of their companies. In fact, even marketing directors of large businesses could benefit from this book, and get some ideas for improving their marketing without spending more than they need to.”

–Jay Miletsky, author of ten books, including the recently released Perspectives on Social Media Marketing

“Terrific. Simon avoids the typical book-writing trap of focusing on widely reported success cases. Instead, he sought out potential companies to write about by using his website, LinkedIn groups, other social networking sites, and Help a Reporter Out. The filtering challenge was two-fold: find companies different from each other enough to be interesting, and find companies open enough to admit mistakes and missteps. For me, the net result of that filtering makes for an immensely practical and, thus, applicable narrative.”

–Matthew E. May, speaker and author of In Pursuit of Elegance: Why the Best Ideas Have Something Missing

.

Having worked for Microsoft and now Google, I continue to be fascinated by how software and technology are helping enterprises better compete. Simon’s book is particularly timely as a logical extension of Chris Anderson’s Free. And like Anderson, Simon is ahead of the curve in his book’s key thesis. Namely, it’s likely that small businesses could actually be the largest benefactors of new technology to dramatically expand their customer base and scalability. New business owners and technophiles alike should enjoy Simon’s vignette approach and real-world examples of how technology might lead a resurgence in America’s small business sector. Another great work and must read. Give us more books, Mr. Simon!
